Engineering360 released an article in February about engineers at the University of California (Santa Barbara) reproducing the adhesion properties of the Sandcastle Worm (Phragmatopoma californica). This glue has great potential for biomedical and industrial applications that require adhesion in wet environments.
In nature, the Sandcastle Worm uses their natural adhesive, or bioadhesive, to build its colonial tube reefs from grains of sand it collects with its tentacles. Their reefs can be found on rocky beaches off the Califonia coast during medium and low tide. The adhesive made by the Sandcastle Worm is actually a two-part adhesive, each part made separately in a gland, then mixed as they are secreted.

A cordless, 400ml dualpak dispenser that has versatility as a portable gun with force of 500kg and a 18 volt Li-ion battery. Ideal for field jobs as well as applications on the manufacturing floor.
A one component, UV curing polyurethane coating that offers high solids, flexibility, surface hardness, moisture and chemical resistance. Fluoresces under UV light to aid inspection.
Dispensing equipment comes in a variety of forms. There are simple systems like a bottle and nozzle or complex meter mix equipment combined with an automated dispensing robot. The equipment needed depends on the type of adhesive, the amount used, and if assembly process integration is desired. Ellsworth Adhesives is happy to find the best dispensing solution for any assembly process and supplies equipment from manufacturers like Cox, Fisnar, Fluid Research, PAM, Sulzer and Techon Systems.
